Our calculator uses 2024/2025 reference prices from BVA fee surveys, RCVS practice data, and PDSA reports, then applies regional multipliers to give you a realistic local estimate.
Why prices vary so much
Several factors push UK vet prices up or down:
- Location — London and the South East carry the highest overheads (rent, staff wages, insurance).
- Practice type — referral hospitals and out-of-hours clinics charge 2–3× standard rates.
- Complexity — a "simple" fracture repair can escalate quickly if complications arise.
- Drug choice — branded medications cost more than generics.
- Pre-op bloodwork and imaging — these add £150–£600 to most surgical procedures.
How pet insurance helps
A single cruciate ligament surgery can cost £4,000–£6,500 in London. A lifetime policy with adequate vet fee cover (£7,000+ per condition, per year) means you can say yes to the treatment your vet recommends instead of the one your bank balance allows.
